Steph works for a consultancy in the planning, development & transport team, Leamington Spa. Currently, she is completing Y6 RIBA Part 2 M.Arch at Sheffield Hallam University. Her past work, based in Sheffield during Studio 4, explored themes of finding beauty in the seemingly dull; taking a second look at spaces and potential for organised 'happenings' demonstrating how they can be occupied and form relationships. As part of Atelier 3 in Y5, her project based in Snipiskes, Vilnius, developed the notion of collecting and collective participation. It questioned the role of the architect in building capacities for communities and also asked what else architectural output could be. This year, as a member of Y6 studio in Atelier 1, Atelier themes around Borders, Frontiers and Territories will be researched and set in and around Newcastle, Berwick-upon-Tweed and the Debatable Lands.
Still grappling with what the right name for the initiative is, the first row of the pin-up sets out what has been at the heart of the initiative (1) and is what I’ve looked back to when the process of … Continue reading Interim Review
A concept animated section showing a pilot run of the first step in the initiative, ‘inflate’ – experimenting with ways to encourage inputs and engagement using ‘alternative’ talents (professions), with architects, available nearby to the Kard Bar site. Following on … Continue reading Concept Pilot at Cross Street
As part of studio, years 5 & 6 took part in a Construction Ecologies workshop. We were asked to bring in four images related to our project’s take on construction ecologies, materiality, process etc. After pinning our images up on … Continue reading Construction Ecologies Session
On a return trip to Newcastle, spatial types found in the emerging significant areas and streets were observed more closely. As part of the cross-pollination process, a series of tests – or pilot interventions – may arise from ideas developed … Continue reading Spatial Taxonomy
In studio, our atelier played with materials, photos, cutting tools, binding tools, found obects etc. as a way to experiment physically with our developing concepts.
To try to project forward from some of the past spaces that emerged from studies and stories within Newcastle so far, I started to look for some examples of current and active people and places which encourage a similar ‘cross-pollination’ of sociableness, activity, meeting etc. The search has started to try to find anything from the past lives of the arcades and notable streets that still lives on.
A mini study of spaces of interest which encouraged mixing of people, social lives, and activities as further exploration in the notion of ‘cross-pollination’.
This post brings together the stories of John Hulme, Marion Naughton and World HQ. Together they show different significant spaces and their social connections to them, within Newcastle – observing their similarities and crossing of paths.

This is a tiny post that wants to share a video of the former Handyside Arcade, that was off Percy Street in Newcastle. Eldon Shopping Centre is now in its place. Moving forward with the notion of ‘Sister Streets’, this video provided by Yorkshire Film Archive, is a great insight into the social function and operation of the Handyside Arcade back in August 1967.
